Explanation
はず expresses what you reasonably expect to be true given the facts: “it should be so”. It is a conclusion from evidence, not a hope. はずがない is the opposite (“there's no way that…”).
Examples
友だちは もう 着いた はずです。
My friend should have arrived already.
あした 雨が ふる はずです。
It should rain tomorrow.
