〜ながらも: even while / despite

Structure

V-radical/adjectif/[Nom] + ながらも

Explanation

Unlike simultaneous ながら (“while doing”), ながらも concedes: せまいながらも “cramped though it is, still…”. It attaches to verb stems, adjectives and nouns, and the second clause defies the expectation. Set phrase: せまいながらも楽しいわが家 “our home, small but happy”.

Examples

Small as it is, our home is a happy one.

Child though he is, he has solid ideas of his own.
