〜たら: if / when

Structure

[Verbe/Adj.-た] + ら

Explanation

Add ら to the plain past to make the most flexible conditional: “if/when A, then B”. B often refers to something after A is completed. It works for both hypothetical and certain future situations.

Examples

If I have money, I'll buy a new car.

When I go to Japan, I'll get in touch.
