Explanation
ものの concedes the first clause is true, but the natural consequence did not follow: 買ったものの、一度も 使っていない “I did buy it, but I've never used it”. More formal/written than けど; close to 〜が、実際は….

I bought a dictionary, but I have never used it.
やると 言ったものの、時間が ぜんぜん ない。
